+ What it does well
Simple Analytics ships AI chat as a marquee feature — "Chat with your analytics" at simpleanalytics.com/ai lets you ask plain-English questions and get insights in real time. One of seven directory tools with first-class conversational AI.
Genuinely simple, single-page dashboard. No funnels, no goals, no events nesting — just pageviews, top pages, top referrers, top countries, devices, screen sizes. The minimalist anti-Mixpanel pitch. For sites that just want a Plausible alternative without thinking about cookieless tradeoffs, Simple Analytics is the cleanest pick.
Referrer-only mechanism — uniqueness inferred from referrer hostname differing from site hostname. THE differentiator vs Plausible/Fathom/Umami salt-hash family. No salt, no rotation, no server-stored fingerprint. The most extreme cookieless approach in the directory after Counter.dev's no-IP-at-backend trick.
Dutch BV with disclosed registered address. EU-only data plane, GDPR-attested. $0 free tier with 100K events/mo + 1 site, $19 paid for 1M events/mo + 5 sites. Strong free tier rare in this directory.
− Weaknesses & gotchas
Closed-source SaaS, no self-host. Plausible/Umami/Matomo all offer a self-host escape hatch; Simple Analytics doesn't. You're locked into their cloud forever — fine if you trust them, but a real downside for the OSS-maximalist crowd.
No funnels, no cohorts, no session recording, no A/B testing, no heatmaps. Simple Analytics is intentionally shallow. If you need any product analytics depth, this isn't the tool.
Datapoint-based pricing. Both Simple ($15) and Team ($40) cap at 20k datapoints/mo by default, with a slider to scale up. The "datapoint" concept blurs pageviews + custom events + 404s — you can hit the cap unexpectedly on a high-event site.
Country-level geo only. No city-level breakdown — a privacy choice, but limits regional optimization.
No mobile SDKs. Mobile-app tracking requires posting raw events to the server-side ingestion endpoint manually.
Referrer-stripping inflates uniques. Browsers that strip the Referer header (Brave's strict mode, Firefox cross-origin trimming, meta referrer=no-referrer) make every landing look like a fresh visitor — over-counts uniques. Not a deal-breaker, but an honesty-tax on the methodology.
★ Best for
Best for indie hackers, solo founders, EU-based bootstrappers, agencies handing off dashboards to non-technical clients, and the build-in-public crowd that embeds public stats pages. Real customers span both ends — Bank of England + Bloomberg on enterprise side, Sketch + Indie Hackers + Nuxt on indie side.
The AI chat is the single biggest reason to pick Simple Analytics over alternatives. If natural-language analytics matters to your team, this is the only privacy-first tool that ships it natively.
No DPA needed in EU procurement — vendor's "neither controller nor processor" stance saves a legal cycle vs Plausible/Matomo where you sign a DPA.
Not for ecommerce teams needing revenue attribution, product analytics teams running cohort/retention/funnels, marketing ops shops in the GA4-Audiences ecosystem, or teams that need self-host as a non-negotiable.
⚡ Setup walkthrough
1. Sign up at simpleanalytics.com → 14-day free trial, no credit card.
2. Add your domain → get a single async tag (~1-3 KB gzipped).
3. Paste in of every page. WordPress users: install the official plugin documented under Integrations.
4. Optional but recommended: route stats through scripts.yourdomain.com + queue.yourdomain.com CNAMEs to dodge ad-blockers.
5. Goals are URL-pattern matchers — set up in 2 minutes per goal.
6. Verify in real-time by opening your site in another tab.
Total time: ~5 minutes for basic setup, +5 for goals.
↔ Migrating from GA4
Native GA4 importer is supported. Simple Analytics has docs for importing both Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4 data — /import-google-analytics-4-data walks through pulling historical pageviews into your Simple Analytics dashboard.
The cutover is a script-swap: drop GA, paste the Simple Analytics tag, recreate goals as URL-pattern matchers (~2 minutes per goal). Custom dimensions and audiences from GA4 do not survive — Simple Analytics's data model is intentionally flat (URL, referrer, country, device, custom event metadata).
What carries over via the Export API: if you're moving away from Simple Analytics later, you can export raw event rows — one of the few privacy analytics tools that exposes raw data via API.
Recommended: parallel tracking for ~30 days. Don't expect identical numbers — referrer-based unique-visit detection (vs hashed-IP elsewhere) means SA's "uniques" can drift from Plausible/Umami's by a few percent, especially on traffic with stripped Referer headers.

Support
FAQ (6)
Is Simple Analytics really free?
Yes — there's a permanent Free fair-use plan (5 sites, 1 user, 30-day history). Paid plans start at $15/mo (Simple) for 20k datapoints with 3-year retention, scaling to $40/mo (Team) for 5-year retention and 2 users. Enterprise custom for higher volumes.
Why is the Free plan called 'fair-use'?
Simple Analytics doesn't impose a strict pageview cap on the Free plan — they use 'fair-use' policy: free for personal/hobby/early-stage projects with reasonable traffic. Heavy commercial use will be flagged for upgrade. The threshold isn't published.
How does Simple Analytics differ from Plausible?
Both are cookieless, EU-hosted, GDPR-friendly, and similar in feature scope. Simple Analytics has a permanent Free tier (Plausible doesn't), AI chat for querying analytics in plain English, custom views, and 5-year retention on the Team plan. Plausible is open-source AGPL with self-hostable CE; Simple Analytics is closed-source SaaS only.
Where is Simple Analytics hosted?
Hetzner data centers in Germany — exclusively EU. Simple Analytics B.V. is incorporated in the Netherlands. No transfer of analytics data to non-EU jurisdictions.
Does Simple Analytics honor Do Not Track?
Yes — Simple Analytics respects the DNT (Do Not Track) browser signal by default. Visitors with DNT enabled are not counted. This is one of the few privacy analytics tools that explicitly honors DNT (Plausible, Fathom, and Umami argue DNT is irrelevant).
Can I migrate from Google Analytics to Simple Analytics?
There's no native GA4 importer. The recommended pattern is parallel installation — run Simple Analytics alongside GA4 for 30-60 days to validate data parity, then deprecate GA4. Simple Analytics' AI chat feature can help compare your numbers across both tools.
